Review : Muse with a slight touch of Mutt
I've been excited to listen to what Mutt Lange could do to Muse's already-flawless "sound." Frankly, I had actually been a bit worried. As far as Mutt albums go, they put this one together pretty quickly. The result is a polished sound, as expected, not that Muse really needed polishing much, but gratefully, that drum machine sound of his work with Def Leppard, Bryan Adams and Shania aren't present. Losing Muse's deep rhythmic sound would have been a disaster.
As far as a concept album, I expected something a little deeper, but that doesn't make "Drones" bad. It's still very much a Muse album, but considering how much I've been reading from Matt that it was head-and-shoulders above their previous work, I have to very much disagree. And that isn't a bad thing. It's a Muse album, through and through. It's a good Muse album. And, in the era of singles, it is a true ALBUM. From start to finish.
